But don’t go and tell on us or the waiter, ok. Occasionally, we don’t get charged for it, which I think is nice of them. Since dinner comes with ice cream (coconut, mango or green tea) for dessert, we usually buy an extra one. My little boy loves, LOVES tofu, so we always ask for a little bowl of it on the side. Although, I think he likes slurping the noodles more! While the dinner plates can be a little pricey, the amount of food you get makes up for it. The plain udon soup and just that, plain but my little boy, loves it. The crunchy chicken (chicken katsu), which is what my oldest son calls it, gets a two-thumbs up from him. The tuna for the tartare has always tasted fresh and the same is for the rolls. He likes the Spicy Tuna roll, Volcano roll, Spider roll, Philly roll. Well, the one thing he ALWAYS gets in the Tuna tartare salad. The husband, on the other hand, is a little more adventurous and gets something different every time. I get the Tempura appetizer and Miso soup. The kids get the Chicken Katsu and the plain Udon soup. We don’t even need to look at the menu any more.

By the time we sit down, the waiter is right there with water, plates and utensils for the kids and green tea for the husband and I. While many of the employees have come and gone, their service has remained the same. My family and I have been coming to Shimo’s (or is it just Shimo?! eh, who cares, right?!) for a few years now. just writing this is making hungry! Ok, will put my cravings aside and start this review. The prices with the other things on the menu. The sushi on the other hand amazing still. I was slightly disappointed this night compared to my younger experiences here. To conclude this review, when it comes to Shimo 2. My gf had no complaints with what she ordered. The saba was a little chewy where I’m used to them being juicy and super tender at my other favorite places. The oysters were awesome, wish they had some tobiko on them though. I got the Ikura nigiri which was just overflowing with salmon roe to my delight. It was a little upsetting but I completed my order anyhow. I was a bit confused since I only got the words «Saba Shio…» out of my mouth. I started trying to list my choices but was ubruptly cut off by, «Please slow down.» rolling off the older waitress’ tongue. The waitress came back to take our order.

To my surprise the prices jolted up quite substantially from my last visit about 5 years ago. Right as my butt touched the chair cusion I automatically ordered «Half dozen oysters please, kthx.» Then we opened the menu to browse for our upcoming man vs sushi contest. After the nostalga hit me I ran across the street while dragging the woman with me like I was back in 6 th grade. I had a little inner mental/belly battle if I should just save some dough by cooking my own late dinner. My gf and I planned to just go to the Taravel safeway but when we parked infront, Shimo’s 2 open sign was glistening in the night. From ages 10 – 19 I would always look forward to coming here. He was good friends with the sushi makers and owner there. My father used to take me to Shimo’s 2 a few times a month for a Japanese feast at the sushi bar here. His wife, Hiroko, is very pleasant and pretty. The mango ice cream was a lovely finish I’ll go back to Shimo 2 if I can’t a better place. I groaned as i was unable to finish the superb poke so I had it for dinner tonight~ a nice appie. The wooden «plates» look lovely with the beautiful mounds of wasabi, daikon and pink ginger. Uni is another caviar that is an indulgence and i wasn’t disappointed as it was plump and fresh, one demotion, he forgot the quail egg… I loved the tuna sushi too. The sweet shrimp sushi WAS SWEET, delicate and FRESH. nest time I’ll cook some at home a la francaise. I was delighted to have the monk fish liver, it was surprisingly delicious. He did a gorgeous poke salad, the construction, presentation was beautiful and masterly. He had on a Shimo T shirt, I rather missed the tradition Japanese style, no head scarf either. The young guy has ZERO PERSONALITY and that makess for little conversation at the bar. Shimo has slowed down too, after all it has been 15 years since I was there. The FISH IS STILL VERY FRESH, beautifully presented, very on the spot and way above the: wanna be” places and above the madding crowd of AWFUL SUSHI BARS. What I did remember was that it WAS FRESH, SWEET FISH. I hadn’t remembered that it charmless of décor. It had just opened and the sushi bar was nearly full. For years i thought it was Kimo’s! I could never find it, thefe it was On my return I hopped off with my luggage wheelie amd went in. Last evening I was on the L Taraval and went past Shimo 2 Sushi.
